GREAT ACCESSORY DWELLING

Our clients wished to add an in-law apartment so that they could welcome a 93 year-old friend into their home. The design centered around providing a relatively large kitchen space since she enjoys cooking, and a bathroom in which she could continue to be as self sufficient as possible as she ages. Working within a specific budget, the project was value engineered to extend and reallocate the budget so that we could offer the most for the money. We incorporated some windows that had previously been misordered that fit well into the space, and incorporated a left over vanity top and tile from another job. The cabinets were carefully selected; a flat panel Aristokraft maple door provided a good value, with an upgrade to the next grade of cabinet chosen so we could get dovetailed drawers in the drawer bases. Money was saved by not upgrading the wall cabinets or other bases. (They all looked the same on the outside). Making these prudent choices allowed us to spend a little extra where it was worthwhile; we chose energy efficient appliances with “nice shelves” over the base models and upgraded the carpet selection with left over money. The client enjoyed the construction process and all the people that worked on their job. They remarked that they would miss us now that the project was complete. The 93 year old friend has settled in and enjoys the space tremendously.
