Function Infused with Fun
To address the cathedral ceiling and the large volume of space that it created, geometric shapes were added to soften the “tall and skinny” aspects of the room. A circular window was added showering the room with light.
The interplay of geometric shapes is highlighted on the end wall where a triangular hood offsets the curves of this round window.
In order to make the kitchen look less of a long, narrow space, a combination of circles, triangles, and rectangles were intermixed on the island, as well as staggering their heights to break up the length of the island.
To increase the usable space in the kitchen, the table was integrated into the island.
The circle detail from the round window is repeated on this table top; the island proper ends with a triangular slab of Rosemary Caesarstone that is inset with a half-moon of San Francisco Verniz granite. The remaining section of that round shape continues on the lower level breakfast table. Here function has been infused with fun.
Materials were counterbalanced as well. Stainless steel keeps it modern, yet the custom medium stained cherry cabinets in a simple Shaker full overlay style keep the kitchen feeling warm. The appliances and custom hood are stainless steel, a material repeated in the backsplash tile medallions and cabinet pulls.
The repeated use of geometric shapes such as triangles and circles, combined with a balance of modern industrial materials with soft mellow colors achieved the result our clients were looking for – a “kitchen with spunk” that is visually delightful.
