"An "architecturally correct" addition with a curved roof and covered porch integrates the new space harmoniously with the original structure. Looks like it has always been there, both inside and out."

1780's Home Returns to its Elegant Roots

(Wilton, CT)

The Concept

Return this historical home to its former dignity.  Remove the ugly additions.  Build two  new additions to house the kitchen and master bath suite, taking care to complement and build upon  the lines of the original home.

The two new additions were built atop one another, in place of the three previous additions not in keeping with the style of the original house.

A covered porch with a curved roof welcomes you as you approach the house. The rails continue around an open deck, which opens up the house to the beautiful back yard.

A detached garage was built in a carriage house style, in keeping with the house-plus-outbuilding style of the late 1700's.

Its rooflines and materials coordinate with those of the original home.  The upstairs has room for a future home office.

First Floor - New kitchen and breakfast nook
The family room was extended with glass doors on three sides, creating a sunny breakfast nook for casual dining.  These french doors were reused and repurposed, helping to maintain the antique feel of the home.

The kitchen balances old and new.

In order to maintain the antique feel of the home, custom wood panels graciously disguise the plethora of modern appliances, bringing  the functionality of the kitchen up to date, while maintaining its charm.

While the main sink is under the window, enjoying the expansive backyard view,

A multipurpose tri-level island provides casual seating, prep sink and plus a raised decorative area.

Copper fixtures in a traditional design and butter-cream cabinetry allow the traditional feel of the antique home to be retained, while having all the modern amenities.

Material Selections

Many custom touches: The custom color enamel on the inset cabinets coordinates with the historically correct paint colors chosen for adjacent rooms.  Perimeter counters are granite, and the tri-level island features a solid cherry top with a complementing granite.  A light is mounted in the counter and shines up through the end of the island into a crystal vase. The kitchen faucet is foot pedal activated.  A smart lighting controller allows lighting themes to be controlled.

"The finished project more than exceeded my wishes and expectations. I was amazed with how the design team balanced historic details with modern amenities to pull together a kitchen and master bath that look like they were always there, but with up-to-date functionality."
